81 Is The New 18!

A few posts ago I mentioned 81-year-old fashionista, Jacquie “Tajah” Murdock and how her dream at 18 was to travel to Paris and model did come true… when she was 81! But, as Jacquie good-naturedly noted, “better late than never”.

And in this spirit of positivity, I said to the Master Homemaker (aka Master Ballmaker, Baker and my Mother-in-Law) that her dream too, could come true at 81. The MH and her siblings were featured in the post The Seven Swedish Sisters When They Were Young. Those of you who read it will remember it was her dream to become a Home Economics teacher.

In the 1950s Queensland it was possible enrol in a five-year teacher training program after completing the Junior Public Examinations.

As you can see from the MH”s Junior Public Certificate, the MH received solid results in all subjects, and excellent results in Home Science (A and B), for which she was awarded a scholarship to the teaching training college. If fate hadn’t intervened, by 18 the MH would have been well on her way to achieving this dream.

But, as many of us know, life doesn’t always go to plan, and the family moved to Melbourne where the scholarship could not be used. Instead the MH was apprenticed as a Tailoress and was so good at the job, she was paid full trade wages well before the completion of her apprenticeship.

I think that, at 81 the MH, should receive an award for her services to Homemaking, and that this award should be seen at least equivalent (if not a little bit higher than) a 1955 home economics teaching graduate, don’t you? In acknowledgement of her skills, I have already shared the easy-to-make and very healthy Protein Balls and Vintage Standard Boiled Fruitcake recipes and more tasty treats and crafty ideas will come your way soon …

I propose that we reverse our ages, admittedly, it’s a lot more fun if you are, like me, and at the beginning of a decade– I’m 52 and if I reverse my age I’m 25 – and you get to fulfil a dream, idea or goal you had at that age.

Mine is not particularly cerebral or deep but it was a dream of mine at 25 – to have matching shoes and handbag. And before my next birthday, I will have made this dream a reality – what does it matter that it is 27 years late, the dream has still come true!

For those of you at the end you are at the end of decade, at say 37, you get to and reverse and imagine what your dreams might be at 73 – and you have the year to think what you dreams might be when you reach that age – it could be as simple as the sheer pleasure of reading in bed all day and having no one to answer to – nothing is too big or too small, after all you are in charge of your own dreams!

Who knows, your dream at 73 might be to stay in bed all day and read ... I think these two have decided to live the dream at a much younger age!
