So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And, if you want plenty of good cheer, you can’t go past the Peter Baker-Finch Christmas Grotto. Valued customers were invited to a function held in store from 5:30 to 8:30pm on Wednesday 28 October 2015 to sup French champagne, listen to the soothing and mellow sounds of an eclectic musical trio (featuring Tamara O’Callaghan on vocals, Grace Hurworth on keys, and Stu Barry on bass), and stroll through the treasure-filled nooks and crannies of the store. A perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit.
Peter Baker-Finch has been the go-to shop for connoisseurs of style and home decorators in-the-know for decades. Established in Fairfield in 1969 by esteemed retailer Peter Baker-Finch, the store expanded and moved into its current location on the corner of Ipswich Road and Clive Street, Annerley, in 1982.
The second generation of Baker-Finch family members (nephew, Chris and his wife, Cathy) now manage the store, and personally choose and ‘curate’ the vast array of unique wares and gifts for sale.
Not only does Peter Baker-Finch uphold a family tradition, it is a dog-friendly store (well-behaved pooches on leads are welcome). Peter and Walter told me that, back in their day, their beloved Weimaraner, Tristan, used to frequent the store but, unfortunately, grew a bit too boisterous and reluctantly had to be retired to home duties. They made my poochettes most welcome at the party, and commented on their excellent behaviour.
What makes Peter Baker-Finch so is special is the service, which is old-fashioned and personalised, and includes gift-wrapping. Just take a look at this beautifully groomed and dexterous hand, at the ready to wrap newly purchased Christmas gifts.
Customer loyalty is strong for the Peter Baker-Finch brand. I spoke to a couple who proudly told me that they purchased an outdoor setting from the Fairfield store more than 40 years ago, and it was still going strong (as they were too). Many shoppers were only too happy to be snapped at their favourite store surrounded by lovely things. Look closely and you might recognise yourself, or someone you know.
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
Whether marking a child’s first Christmas or honouring a family tradition, a visit to the Christmas Grotto is the perfect way to start the festive season. Let’s take a look at what is on offer at Peter Baker-Finch…
and lots more…
Homewares mecca or Aladin’s cave – you decide?
No matter which reference you prefer, you will find gorgeous homewares, indoor and outdoor furniture, tableware, lamps, jewellery, and accessories of every type (garden, personal and pet). Personally, I can’t go past a good scented soap or candle, and Peter Baker-Finch stocks a cornucopia of these treats.
It’s the perfect made-to-order store brimming with potential gifts for the person who has everything, and there’s no need to keep it a secret – let’s take a look to see what’s currently on offer…
Frocktopia – because it’s going to be a long, hot (and humid) summer
I am not sure if I just invented a word (or not) but no matter, Peter Baker-Finch has the best range of frocks to get you through the festive season: they are cool, colourful, and ever so easy to wear. Take a look at this delightful range of dresses, but be warned you might want more than one.
I have this one…
And could very easily choose another…
But why not go and see for yourself – the Peter Baker-Finch store is open Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm, Saturday from 9am until 4pm, and Sunday from 10am until 3pm. The location of this iconic store is the corner Ipswich Road and Clive Street, Annerley (my ‘hood’).
And so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun

The old and the young
